World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev had a fantastic season in 2021 where apart from his individual accolades, he also had success with the national team. The Russians won the 2021 ATP Cup with Medvedev playing an important part in it. The season ended for Daniil at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals where the Russians won the ‘World Cup of Tennis’ to cap off a successful season.

On the ATP Tour, Medvedev claimed 4 trophies including his first-ever Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open defeating World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and denying the Serbian the chance to win all 4 Grand Slams of the season and achieve the Calendar Slam. Djokovic had earlier defeated Medvedev in the finals of the 2021 Australian Open and it was sweet revenge for Daniil.

With the 2022 ATP Cup scheduled in Sydney where the Russians will defend their 2021 title and look to become the first team to do so, Medvedev talked about how is he coping up with the pressure of defending their title and what does the Russian tennis have in future.

“Last year has been amazing for Russian tennis in general, and I think that’s what can, once again, help us a lot this week because everyone expects us to do well. And I like that kind of pressure. It makes you play better.

However, it’s never easy to start the season. In three matches, only one team leaves the group, so you have to win as many matches as possible, ask yourself as few questions as possible and simply try to win,” said Medvedev during his press conference ahead of their first group match.

Russia is drafted into Group B where they are joined by last year’s runners-up Italy, France and host nation Australia. With only the group-winners heading into the next round, every rubber will be important for the teams and given Russia’s heroics in the last season, they are favourites to go into the next round.

With the ATP Cup set to finish on 9th January, Medvedev has yet not confirmed his first Tour event of the 2022 season as he will have only 1 week of Tour action to his credit when he enters Melbourne Park for the upcoming 2022 Australian Open.
