“It’s not for players to decide,” Daniil Medvedev opines on the vaccination policy at US Open 2021

Daniil Medvedev cruised into the third round of US Open 2021, with a straight sets victory over Dominik Koepfer in the second round. The Russian looked pretty comfortable during his win, as he hardly gave his opponent any chance.

While speaking in the post-match press conference, Daniil Medvedev was asked to opine on the covid-19 vaccination policy. US Open 2020 runner-up, Victoria Azarenka failed to understand the vaccination policy, and stated how bizarre it was for fans to be vaccinated, but not the players.

However, Daniil Medvedev claimed that the decision was in the hands of the governing body, and not the players themselves. “Tough to answer on this question. I think everybody can have his own opinion. Yeah, I don’t have an answer to this question, honestly. I understand why they did it to the fans. So far it has not been applied to the players. We as players, we can just follow the guidelines and the rules. That’s all we can do,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev stated that as players, their job is to give their best on court. However, the vaccination policy depends on the governing bodies.

“I think it’s not for players to decide, because that’s why we have governing bodies in tennis. Sometimes we might not be happy with them; sometimes we might be happy. But it’s still them who make the decisions. It’s definitely not players. Otherwise many things could be different in a good or a bad way. So we are just, you know, hard workers who do their job on the tennis court,” he added.

Moreover, Daniil Medvedev gave his thoughts on the speed of courts at US Open 2021. The Russian believes that due to certain conditions, the centre court is much slower than usual.

“(On) center court, especially in Grand Slams, the difference is huge. It’s normal. The surface they are going to put it the same; just the conditions gonna be different. So center court is always slower,” the Russian added.

He said that he had practiced on other courts, which were super fast, hence he has to adjust his game while playing on centre court. “I practiced on the practice courts, and they are super fast,” he added. “It’s like many, many times you take the ball late. Center is a bit slower conditions; not the surface itself, it’s pretty fast. The serve goes fast, it slides in the court,” the second seed continued.
