Daniil Medvedev started his Wimbledon 2021 campaign with a hard-fought victory against Jan-Lennard Struff, defeating the German 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7).
It was a sweet revenge for Medvedev who had been defeated by Struff in the 1st round of the ATP Halle Open 2021 and with a successful week at the ATP Mallorca Open 2021 where he won his first Grass title, Medvedev announced himself at the All-England Club.
Medvedev analyses his match
Medvedev started well winning both the opening sets in no time. But from the 3rd set, Struff made life difficult for the Russian who dropped the 3rd set and had to win it in the 4th-set tiebreaker.
“It was a tough match, Jan is a tough opponent, especially on Grass. He’s got a huge serve and good volley. It’s some times good enough to win a match on Grass. First two sets he was not on his best level. I managed to make all the break points I had, just kept putting pressure on him.
“Third set, he raised his game, he served and volley and that made the difference, it was tougher for me to get an opportunity and even when I had them, I could’ve done a little bit better and he made one good game where he managed to break and that turned the match around a little bit, I started to be more under pressure.
“So, actually it was a good tennis match to watch because it had a lot of momentum changes and the 4th set was kind of the most even one where both had our chances and both played really good and I’m really happy that I managed to get it to the tiebreaker and not lose the serve in the tiebreaker and get it done because that was not easy today.” said Medvedev about his performance.
Daniil Medvedev talks about his chance of becoming World No. 1 at the end of Wimbledon
Daniil Medvedev is currently on 10,280 points while Novak Djokovic tops the charts with 12,113 points. If Medvedev is able to win the Grand Slam at Wimbledon this year, he could pip Novak and become the World No. 1 for the very first time in his career.
“I think I knew it since the start of the Clay season where I don’t have any points to defend till Washington or Cincinnati. Well, I don’t have a lot. So, yeah, I always had this opportunity but I know I need to make it till the finals of a Grand Slam, or win a Masters or win a Grand Slam to make it especially when Novak who doesn’t want to lose any points.
“So, it doesn’t put extra pressure on me because I always try to do my best, try to win tournaments, try to win matches. That’s the most important, that’s how you can become the No. 1, if you win 3 Grand Slams in a year you will probably gonna be No. 1.” said Medvedev about his stand on becoming the World No. 1.
“I got asked this questions on Clay, but then the results were not following, so I got asked less. But I got to answer these questions. Every tournament I play, I play to win.” said Medvedev about him being questioned by people if he knows he can become the World No. 1.
“After Mallorca, I am felling super good on Grass, I am feeling in great shape, today played 4 sets, physically it was good, tennis wise I think it was a great match. I think if I manage to raise my level a little, I have a opportunity to be far in the tournament, and being far in the tournament always means you have a chance to win.” concluded Medvedev as he prepares for Round 2.
Daniil Medvedev will clash with the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Yasutaka Uchiyama in the 2nd round.
