“Novak Djokovic is the man under pressure” Daniil Medvedev talks about his chances at the upcoming 2021 US Open

Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev has long been the challenger to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic but somehow has failed to ascend the top given Djokovic’s brilliance. Medvedev stood a chance to reach the summit had he won the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but a 4th round exit denied him the chance to move past Novak who was the eventual champion at the Grand Slam.
With the 2021 US Open approaching fast, Daniil can again become the World No. 1 if he is able to win the Grand Slam in New York which would also be his maiden Grand Slam title. The Russian reached the finals of the 2019 US Open and then again at the 2021 Australian Open but lost out to Rafael Nadal in US Open and then to Djokovic in Melbourne.
“Definitely Novak is going to be the highest contender. He’s winning almost all the Grand Slams right now. He has already won 20. He has experience. He has a level. I’m not gonna lie. So he’s the man under pressure, but I think he likes it, as some guys under pressure can crack. That’s not about Novak. So he’s definitely the main contender,” said Medvedev about his rivalry with Djokovic.
Daniil Medvedev won his 4th Masters title at the 2021 Toronto Masters

Medvedev has been in great form since the Hardcourt season resumed and has definitely levelled up his game on Clay and Grass as well which were comparatively his weaker surfaces. Daniil reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and then won the 2021 Toronto Masters, his 4th Masters title defeating American biggie Reilly Opelka in the finals.
He stands a great chance to win the 2021 Cincinnati Masters as well where he has already qualified for the semis and has not dropped a set in his run till the semis. If he wins back-to-back titles, he will definitely have odds inclined towards him when he travels to New York where Nadal, Roger Federer and defending champion Dominic Thiem will be absent.
His biggest obstacle will be Novak Djokovic who has not featured on the ATP Tour since his triumph in Wimbledon and last played in the Bronze medal match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he was unfortunate to miss out on the medal.
The 2021 US Open will begin from the 30th August with the Men’s Singles finals scheduled on 12th September which will conclude the Grand Slams for the season.
