Daniil Medvedev, highest seed remaining at the Australian Open 2022 defeated Maxime Cressy in a grueling four set encounter on Monday. Medvedev emerged victorious by a score-line of 6-2, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 in one of the most grueling matches of the tournament.

Maxime Cressy executed his game plan perfectly after falling behind in the first set. The American served and volleyed as Medvedev had no response to his opponent’s serve. There were plenty of aces on offer today at the Margaret court Arena, as a total of 33 aces were served.

Daniil Medvedev called Maxime Cressy boring during the match, as he kept on using the same strategy of serve and volley. However, the Russian took back his words, and admitted to playing mind games.

With that sentence I wanted to get into his head a little, maybe he would think about what I was saying and so he could change tactics, make something wrong. I’m not happy with what I said,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev could manage to convert just 3 out of his 12 break point opportunities, whereas, Maxime Cressy could not break the Russian even once. Medvedev was very efficient in his service games, as he gave the American just one break point opportunity.

Daniil Medvedev will now face the ninth seed, Felix Auger Aliassime in the quarterfinals of Australian Open 2022. The duo clashed against each other in the semifinals of US Open 2021, where Medvedev emerged victorious.

Daniil Medvedev has had two high intensity matches so far at the Australian Open, the first of which came against the crowd favorite, Nick Kyrgios in only the second round. However, the world number two has held his nerve when it matters the most throughout the course of the tournament.

Daniil Medvedev won an astonishing 85% of his points on first serve, whereas, claimed 73% of his points on second serve. In all, Medvedev won 156 points, whereas, the American won 138 points.
