‘Disgusting’ Andy Murray furious over Priti Patel’s remarks on Ukrainian refugee crisis
Andy Murray and Priti Patel
As war rages on in Ukraine, innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homeland and seek refuge elsewhere. The tennis fraternity has unequivocally expressed its support for the war-torn country. Numerous players have voiced their support and decided to aid Ukraine in their own ways.
Andy Murray has pledged to donate his prize money earnings for the remainder of the year, to aid humanitarian relief for children in Ukraine. Murray, who is a UNICEF ambassador, partnered with them to help provide medical supplies and early developmental kits to children affected due to the war. The Brit also highlighted the effect that war has on the children’s education and appealed to others to join in on the deed.
Considering the solidarity that he displayed recently, Murray was visibly furious over UK home secretary, Priti Patel’s remarks on the crisis, who has been under increased scrutiny over delay in granting asylum to Ukrainian refugees.
Britain is yet to completely open its borders to refugees fleeing Ukraine and has been criticized for their soft stance in midst of crisis. Priti Patel faced a barrage of criticism for the handling of the refugee situation, following this the visa requirements were eased. Their neighboring country, Ireland has relatively easy requirements to enter the country. Patel now is embroiled in another controversy after she suggested to Irish PM Michael Martin that the country’s welcoming policy will backfire on the UK. Patel claimed that criminals and drug dealers will have a ‘backdoor’ entry and can gain access to mainland Britain. Murray was furious over these egregious remarks and made his frustration known on such preposterous thoughts.
Andy Murray will take on Taro Daniel in his opener at the Indian Wells
Murray will begin his campaign at the Indian Wells against qualifier Taro Daniel in the opening round. Murray, who received a wildcard to enter the main draw, will be squaring off against Daniel for the third time in as many months. They earlier played against each other during the Australian Open 2022, where Murray lost in straight sets. The former World No.1 got his revenge when he was on the winning side during their previous match-up at the Qatar Open.
The Indian Wells is the only hard-court Master 1000 tournament where Murray has failed to win a title. However, he has a good track record with two semi-final appearances to his name, and will now be looking to continue his ascent up the rankings at the ‘Tennis Paradise.’
