World No. 15 Dominic Thiem has had a year to forget. The Austrian has suffered from loss of form and recurring injuries. The Austrian star had to withdraw from his season early on August 18 due to a recurring wrist injury. The injury he picked up was back in July at the ATP 250 event held in Mallorca.
Even prior to his injury, the 28 year had struggled with his form. At the ATP Cup, his Austrian team went out in the group stages, while he also failed to get deep into any of the Grand Slam’s he participated in 2021.
This was far off from his 2020 season, when he won his first Grand Slam trophy of his career in the form of the 2020 US Open.
Thiem looks to make a comeback
After pulling out of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, where he was supposed to play Andy Murray in the quarter-finals of the tournament held at Abu Dhabi citing a lack of preparation and confidence. The former World No. 3 player has barely played any events in the current year. He reached the fourth round of the Australian Open before losing to Grigor Dimitrov. Thiem reached the finals in 2020 in Melbourne.
Thiem had earlier set his goal to make a comeback in future events with full preparation.
“Withdrawal from Abu Dhabi is no setback as it was clear from the beginning that it’ll be close. He is pain-free but still misses some confidence on the forehand. He plans to play the ATP Cup and the Australian Open, maybe 250 events in Sydney,” Thiem said.
However, Dominic Thiem has now confirmed that he would be looking to make a comeback and play in the Buenos Aires (250) and the Rio de Janeiro (500) in February.
The Austrian would look to make a comeback to tennis after a early end to his 2022 and would be looking forward to reach his former heights again as he looks to climb up the rankings again.
