Former Australian tennis Paul McNamee recently tweeted about 20-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic‘s current reputation among the society regarding his conduct and decision on anti-vaccination during the 2022 Australian Open, which caused a heavy impact on his physical and mental health.

Having been detained twice and then deported after having a court judgment on his participation, Novak though he got a lot of encouragement from fellow athletes and fans, was equally or more heavily criticized by many players, not just publicly but also privately.

On March 7, Former singles and doubles champion McNamee has always rooted for Djokovic and considered him to be one of the best players. Thus, the Aussie has defended the Serbian against criticisms and wrongful actions on multiple occasions.

“Sadly, wherever I go, whether it’s at golf, tennis, wherever, I run into people bringing up Novak, who want me to join them ‘bagging’ him.” Read the tweet. “I tell them immediately.” To this, McNamee wrote, “Don’t say a word against him in my presence, as he’s my friend” I think, by the end, they respect his authenticity.”

Paul is a former World No. 24, with two ATP titles under his name. As the former Australian Open tournament director, McNamee felt that the treatment with Djokovic was unfair, having revoked his visa. He said, “He deserves his day on the court, not in court.”

He has also spoken against Patrick McEnroe regarding the comparison between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic “Dear Patrick, Novak has not spent his life ‘chasing down Roger and Rafa’.. he’s just been himself and continues to do so… that’s the part that’s missed by so many who can’t, or do not want, to see,” tweeted McNamee.

“Novak Djokovic, perhaps the foremost athlete on the planet, is here to defend his title. He was approved to fly here by Tennis Australia, the Vic Govt & the Prime Minister himself. He followed our rules. If deported, our reputation as a great sporting nation may never be the same,” tweeted the former Australian doubles No. 1.
