Sexist? Eddie Jones slammed on Twitter for his comments on Emma Raducanu

The teenager Emma Raducanu broke into the scene this year, having appeared in the fourth round of Wimbledon. She stunned everyone by lifting her maiden Grand Slam at the Flushing Meadows, that too without dropping a set. Post US Open, life hasn’t been easy for the British number 1. In her first tournament after US Open, she crashed out in the very first round of Indian Wells. After that, she managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open before losing to Marta Kostyuk.

Raducanu, who managed to achieve this incredible feat without dropping a single set throughout the tournament, was flooded with business deals and sponsorships. Emma has made public appearances in events like Met Gala and has featured on magazine covers. However, she hasn’t won any tournaments since the US Open.

England’s rugby coach Eddie Jones made headlines when he warned up-and-coming player Marcus Smith about distractions. His intention might have been to shield Smith, however, he chose to do so by using Emma Raducanu as an example. The blatant disregard for the 18-year-old grand slam champion did not sit well with Twitterati, who slammed the veteran coach and demanded apologies.

Taking a dig at her, Jones said “The big thing for good young players is distractions. The distractions could be the exposure they get in the media, the praise they get, the criticism they get. There can be groups of agents who see this guy as the next big thing”. “There’s a reason why the girl who won the U.S. Open hasn’t done so well afterward. What have you seen her on? The front page of Vogue, the front page of Harper’s Bazaar, whatever it is, wearing Christian Dior clothes” he further added.

Jones conceded that while they all start out in humble terms, their temperament changes with fame “He is grounded, but they all start off grounded. No one starts with their feet off the ground or they don’t get in the team, or they don’t win a U.S. Open. But there’s this flood of distractions that comes in that makes you ungrounded”.

Eddie Jones bashed on twitter for his comments

Most sports fans and critics didn’t take kindly to the harsh words used by Eddie Jones. British sportswriter Oliver Brown called it “slightly gratuitous”.

Replying to Brown’s tweet, tennis commentator David Law termed Jones’ words as “utter nonsense”.

David further issued a series of tweets, calling out Eddie’s words as uninformed and sexist.
