Emma Raducanu
18-year old British sensation, Emma Raducanu continues her dream run in New York and serves a bagel and breadstick to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the third round of the 2021 US Open. Raducanu demolished Sorribes Tormo in straight sets 6-0,6-1 to enter the Round of 16 on her US Open debut.
Raducanu, is is slowly becoming a household name, entered the big stage just a month ago at Wimbledon where she reached the Round of 16 on her grand slam debut.
She has been absolutely flying in this tournament coming as a qualifier. As the 31st seed, she got through the qualifiers easily without dropping a set and then got lucky in the first round, beating lucky loser Stefanie Vögele, after Jennifer Brady pulled out. She then avenged her Silicon Valley loss to Chinese Zhang Shuai in the second round.
In the third round against Sorribes Tormo, Raducanu was once again not the favorite to win given the Spaniard’s current form. She is coming into the tournament after a stunning win over world no.1 Ash Barty in the opening round of the Tokyo Olympics and hence was projected to reach the Round of 16, but the 18-year old had different plans.
Raducanu hammers Tormo

She went all guns blazing right from the start of the first set and left Tormo a sitting duck. The Spaniard had no answers for Raducanu’s on court pace and power. Raducanu’s precision on the groundstrokes took everyone by surprise as she painted the lines on almost every winner and bageled Tormo in the first set.
The young Brit was dominant as the first set in the second. She worked on the same strategy and it paid off well. She won as many as 5 straight games to take a 5-0 lead which meant that she had won a whopping 11 straight games in the match. She eventually won the set 6-1 and closed out the match in just 70 minutes.
