Ever since Emma Raducanu shocked the world by winning the 2021 US Open having started as a qualifier ranked 150th in the world and won the Grand Slam without dropping a single set in the 10 matches she played, the Brit has been one of the most popular players on the Tour with every little detail being monitored about the superstar of the future.

While she has certainly gotten a taste of the glamour after her success and is bringing in new endorsements and brand deals for having quickly become one of the popular players, life on the Tour has not been well for the teenager who is playing just her first full season this year.

Emma is currently on a 3-6 record since she won the US Open and is currently 1-3 for the 2022 season. As the Brit prepares to play in the 2022 Indian Wells Open looking for her 2nd win of the season, 2nd tour title and her 1st WTA-1000 title, 18-time Grand Slam and former World No. 1 Chris Evert spoke about Emma’s situation right now.

“I think Raducanu has a high ceiling. I don’t know when we’re going to see it because there are so many great players out there, and I think she’s still young and she still can improve her game. It’s so human to have a little bit of downfall after you win your first Grand Slam. Most of the women who have won their first Grand Slam title have done that, where all of a sudden they’re not winning anymore. They’re not as dominant as people think they should be.

“Even though she’s gotten a lot of endorsements and she’s raking in the money, I genuinely feel that tennis is still the number one priority in her mind. I do believe she’s working hard at her game. But it’s going to be tough because now she has a target on her back and now all the players are gunning for it,” said Evert as reported by Tennisuptodate.

The word is out with all of Emma Raducanu’s patterns says Chris Evert

Chris Evert emphasised that when Emma played at the US Open, nobody knew what the player had in her arsenal and she could surprise everyone. Things have however changed since then as players have been able to cook the strategy for Emma and given the Brit’s inexperience, it works in the favour of the opponent.

“They know she doesn’t have the confidence that she had at the US Open or the unpredictability. They know her game. After a newcomer wins a Grand Slam, every coach is getting statistics finding out ‘does she get more crosscourt forehands or more down the line forehands? Where does she go with her first serve normally?’ They study the player, and now the word is out with all of her patterns,” added Evert.

Coming into Indian Wells from an injury withdrawal mid-match in Mexico, Emma will start her campaign in the ‘Tennis Paradise’ against Caroline Garcia comes into the second round with a tough 3-set win over Dayana Yastremska and will now take on the underconfident Emma who had a bye in the first round.
