3 weeks ago Emma Raducanu was preparing for the qualifying rounds of the US Open 2021 where the then World No. 150 had to battle in 3 matches to make it into the main-draw of the 2nd Grand Slam tournament of her career. Well, she not only did enter the main-draw, but she also went on to win the title without dropping a single set throughout the tournament in the 10 matches she played.

Emma’s victory ended Britain’s wait of 53 years for a British woman champion at the US Open as she become just the 2nd British woman to win the title in New York in the Open Era since Virginia Wade won the inaugural 1968 US Open. Virginia was also the last British woman to win a Grand Slam title, winning the 1977 Wimbledon, with Emma ending a 44-year wait for the nation.

I think I’m still on a high. When I got home here yesterday I just slept the whole day so I think I’m just starting to recover and rest and I think my body needs it after the experience that I’ve had. It’s funny because sometimes I’ll just have random bursts where I’m like, ‘oh my god, I just won the US Open!’ It’s a strange feeling to comprehend, but watching the match last night helped it sink in,” said Emma.

Andy Murray was the last Britisher to win the US Open title when he lifted the trophy in 2012, having finished runner-up at the 2011 US Open. Emma’s victory made her the first Brit since Murray to get her hands on the trophy in New York. Being the first qualifier in the history of tennis to win a major, Emma has received quite a lot of praise for her achievement.

Honestly, I can’t even get a court at my local club. I’m pretty sure nothing changes. I haven’t really even thought of that, when I go back to training I’ll see if anything changes. But until then nothing,” said the new World no. 23 as she becomes the heart of the nation having received special notes from the Royal family including the Queen of England herself for her historic victory.
