‘Another Milestone!’ Emma Raducanu tops the list of most searched tennis players in 2021

Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu burst into the tennis scene last year when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, her first Major in her senior career. Her scintillating debut grabbed headlines all over the world as she became the youngest British woman to advance to the fourth round in the open era. However, she had to withdraw from her round of 16 match after she experienced breathing difficulties during the match.

After her withdrawal, many famed personalities including Piers Morgan and John McEnroe said Raducanu couldn’t cope with the pressure and the situation got the better of her.

But the Brit proved her naysayers wrong when she put up an astonishing run at the US Open, to win her maiden Grand Slam title. The 18-year-old broke several records during her fairytale run at the Flushing Meadows. She soon became the talk of the town and was even pegged to be tennis’ next golden girl following her amazing campaign.

According to research from Futures Sport in association with the Women’s Sport Trust, Raducanu was one of the most searched athletes on Google last year. Her name was searched a staggering 8 million times in the UK alone after her US Open win, a huge increase from 256 searches before May. She was in fact the 4th most searched athlete on Google in the world and the most googled tennis player in 2021. This might be just the start for the young Briton, whose debut on the WTA circuit was not that long back.

Since her stunning win in New York last year, Raducanu has been struggling with inconsistency and her start to the 2022 season hasn’t been a good one either. After being knocked out in the first round of the WTA Sydney International, Raducanu bowed out in the second round of the Australian Open.

She will be hoping to shrug off her recent defeats and fare better as she is set to return to action this month. She will feature as the top seed at the Abierto Akron Zapopan, a WTA 250 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. She will be headlining the tournament along with Leylah Fernandez and Elina Svitolina, which begins on May 21st.
