Carlos Alcaraz
World No. 16 Carlos Alcaraz continues his amazing run that continues to shock the tennis fraternity as the 18-year old defeats defending champion Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals of the 2022 Miami Masters. Alcaraz won the match 7-6(5), 7-6(2) to reach the biggest career final so far in his short career and is set to break into the Top-15 on Monday after the finals.
With Hurkacz coming into the match having defeated top-seeded Daniil Medvedev and stopping the Russian from reaching the World No. 1 spot, it was deemed to be a thrilling match between him and the Spaniard and the duo did not disappoint playing out a fantastic thriller in the Miami Gardens with both players putting in a disciplined performance with no double fault in their 2-hour battle.
Neither of the players had their serve broken and both saved 3 breakpoints each during the match. It all came down to the unforced errors with Hurkacz making 28 while Carlos made 11 as the Spaniard clinched the match with 88 points while Hurkacz had to settle for 79 points despite hitting 28 winners to Carlos’ 24.
“I have a lot of emotions right now. It is everything you dream of when you are a child. It’s pretty good to be in a final in Miami here, I love it here. The crowd was amazing. I will try to play like it’s the first round to mask the nerves. I think I’m going to enjoy it and it will be a great final.
“I couldn’t return his serves, but I knew that the match was going to be long sets like it was 7-6, 7-6. In the beginning, I saw that I couldn’t return. I thought we were going to play a lot of tie-breaks. A little bit different [than my previous matches] with his serve, but it’s a great win for me,” said Alcaraz after his win.
Casper Ruud awaits Carlos Alcaraz in the finals on Sunday
The Miami Gardens will have a new winner this year and it will be one of the two between Casper Ruud and Carlos who will both play in their maiden ATP-1000 finals. Ruud ended Francisco Cerundolo‘s underdog run in straight-sets and will now be competing for his second title of the season along with Carlos who also has a title under his belt so far this season.
Alcaraz will be the new World No. 12 on Monday when the rankings are updated making his Top-15 debut. He can improve to World No. 11 if he claims the title. Both Ruud and Alcaraz have dropped one set this week in Miami, coincidentally dropping it in the quarter-final match and look certain to bring a thrilling contest on the Center Court.
