“Faced many problems and Challenges!” Novak Djokovic FINALLY speaks about the Australian Open debacle

Novak Djokovic has finally spoken up about his detention in Australia but decided to reveal his version of how the events unfolded, later on. Djokovic was initially granted an exemption to enter Australia on ‘medical reasons’, but was detained on his arrival. This order was then overturned in the federal court and it looked like the Serb would be allowed to defend his Australian Open crown. But a couple of days later Djokovic’s visa was canceled and he was deported from Australia.

World No.1 has maintained a relatively low profile since his return to Serbia and has said he will express his ‘version’ of the events in 7-10 days.

Djokovic briefly talked about the fiasco which took place in Melbourne when he visited Serbian president, Aleksander Vucic at the presidential palace in Belgrade. In the brief public address made by Djokovic, he thanked the president of Serbia for supporting him during his plight in Australia and described the events which took place as ‘unfortunate’.

I wanted to meet with you today because, primarily as a citizen of Serbia, I felt a great need to thank you for great support that you, as the president of Serbia, gave me, as well as all state institutions during the unfortunate events in Australia,” Djokovic said.

Later on, he also expressed gratitude to his family and fans for standing by him during the ordeal. “Although I was alone in detention, and faced with many problems and challenges, I wasn’t feeling lonely. I had huge support primarily from my family, all of the close people in my life, entire Serbian nation, many people with good intentions from the region and the world,” the World No.1 said.

Vucic then went on to praise Djokovic and said that he’ll defeat Nadal and Federer and win the French Open and the Wimbledon. It is still unclear whether Djokovic will be allowed to defend his French Open title. Currently, France gives exemption to unvaccinated people who have tested positive in the last 6 months.

Djokovic claimed that he tested positive in mid-December. But, new rules are set to materialize on February 15, which reduces the exemption validity from six months to four months. This will mean that the Serb might not be allowed to participate in the French Open which begins on May 22.
