In a post on LinkedIn recently, the French coach shed light on his brand of coaching and how he maintains a solid relationship with his students. He said that the key to a successful player-coach relationship is trust, energy, care and commitment.

Alongside this, the Frenchman also shared a beautiful montage of him and Serena talking comfortably with each other. In another important point, he emphasized the importance of the player to feel that they are in the right hands to achieve peak performance levels and take their game to the next level. The video also features Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is another disciple of the esteemed coach.

The 53-year-old coach drives in his point by comparing a student-coach relationship to that of a couple.

“A lot of people ask me how I maintain a good coach-player relationship. The answer goes beyond tennis. Just like any relationship, the key relies in trust, care, commitment and energy. Like for a couple, it is important to maintain interest, to consider that it is a relationship that needs to be worked on every day. It is mainly based on Caring and listening. Showing interest. The player has to feel all the time that the coach has his back. That he is focused on her. His motivation for the player to perform should be strong enough to be felt by the player. But it goes beyond tennis. The player has to feel that she can 100% rely on her coach, that she can trust him,” he wrote.

“More than a tennis coach, her coach should be the one to turn to when she needs to talk, when she has a problem to solve. Someone who will always help her think right and take the right decisions. We are hired for a purpose which is to help the player perform. We should permanently keep that in mind a find more and more solution for growth. Moreover, there are many different ways to communicate, and many ways to work through progress. Understanding the needs of the “client” and the way he feels the most comfortable with processing his progresses is part of the job and a great way to build a very strong player-coach relationship.”- read Mouratoglou’s post.
