Felix Auger Aliassime has been on a dream run at US Open 2021, as he reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday. His quarterfinal opponent, Carlos Alcaraz had to withdraw from the match owing to an injury.
Felix Auger Aliassime led the match before the Spaniard was forced to retire. The Canadian was already a set up and a break up in the second set. The 21-year-old reached an amazing milestone, as he made it to his first ever Grandslam semifinals at US Open 2021.
Felix Auger Aliassime will now face the Russian, Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals on Friday. The second seed has been in some form this campaign, and is one of the top contenders to claim the title this time around.
“It’s an amazing milestone. It’s been a fantastic tournament for me. Of course it was a weird ending today. But in the end, I’m through. I’ll have a chance to play on Friday against one of the best players in the world right now to have a chance to be in my first Grand Slam final. It’s amazing, I’m happy I’m through and I’ll try to win the next one,” said Felix.
Carlos Alcaraz’s injury was unfortunate: Felix Auger Aliassime
Felix Auger Aliassime has defeated some good opponents on his way to the semifinals. He defeated the experienced Spaniard, Roberto Bautista Agut in a grueling five set encounter. In the fourth round of US Open 2021, he went past the American, Frances Tiafoe in four sets.
However, the Canadian stated that the end to his quarterfinal battle against Carlos Alcaraz was unfortunate, and thanked the fans for showing up again. He also stated that he was unaware about the Spaniard’s injury before he called out the physio on court.
“No, I didn’t [know anything was wrong] until he called the physio. I don’t know what happened, clearly, but it’s unfortunate. I didn’t see it coming. He’s such a good player. You guys were amazing again tonight. I thought we were putting on a good show,” said Felix.
