FIRED! Andy Murray parts ways with coach after dismal run at the Australian Open
Andy Murray
Former World No.1 Andy Murray has announced his decision to part ways with his coach Jan De Witt, following his second-round exit at the Australian Open 2022. Jan De Witt was coaching Murray on a trial basis after the Brit split up with his previous coach Jamie Delgado last year.
Murray has been struggling for fitness and form, after being plagued by injuries over the years and also having undergone multiple surgeries. But his start to his 2022 campaign was rather a better one. He had a decent outing at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship and also defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets, but lost to Andrey Rublev. He backed this up with a runner-up finish at the ATP Sydney International, having lost to Aslan Karatsev in the finals.
The three-time Grand Slam champion won his first-round match at the Australian Open against Nikoloz Basilashvili in a five-set thriller. This was Murray’s first win at the Australian Open since 2017. But the Brit surprisingly lost in the second round to World No. 120 Taro Daniel in straight sets. This loss marked the first time, Murray lost to an opponent ranked outside the top-100 at a Grand Slam. Following this loss, Murray even hinted that his retirement may be near, as he feels he isn’t able to perform on the top level anymore.
Andy Murray ends partnership with Jan De Witt
According to the Telegraph, Murray has decided to end his partnership with Jan De Witt, which was on a trial basis, after his disappointing run at the Australian Open. Murray will be looking for a new coach for his next tournaments. He also stressed the fact, that his tennis career is now limited and the decision to select his coach is particularly an important one.
“The decision is an important one for me because obviously, I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing so I want to make sure that the person that’s with me for the last period of my career is the right one.”
This is the second coach that Murray decided not to partner with on a permanent basis in three months. He first hired Esteban Carril on a trial run towards the end of last year but decided to split up, after Esteban said he was reluctant to travel throughout the season.
Murray will be next seen in action at the ATP tournaments in the Middle East, at Doha, which begins on February 14th, and then in Dubai, which begins on the 21st.
