Fabio Fognini is currently ranked number 31 in the world and made his third appearance at the Olympic games after previously playing at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. Fognini lost in the first round in London in three sets against Novak Djokovic.  At the Rio Olympics, he reached the third round where he lost in a tough three set match against then world number 2 and defending champion, Andy Murray. Fognini made his career-high ranking in July 2019 of world number 9.

In the first round at Tokyo, Fognini faced world number 114, Yuichi Sugita from Japan. Fognini secured his spot in the second round in 1 hour and 48 minutes after winning the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Though the score-line may make one think that the match was one sided, that is not the case as Sugita gave Fognini quite the fight. There was just a difference of 8 points in the match with Fognini winning 33 points while Sugita won 25. However, the Italian was able to convert 2 out of his 3 break points while Sugita did not succeed in any of the two break points.
