Second grand slam of the year, The French Open is on our door steps and the preparations are in full swing in Paris. The Qualifiers for both Men and Women starts on May 24, with players requiring 3 straight wins to qualify for the main draw.

Total of 128 players will compete in the qualifying rounds out of which, 16 will advance to the main draw. Players have been granted entry according to their world rankings while 9 players have received wild cards.

Current World No.89, Ilya Ivashka is the highest ranked player on the ATP tour who couldn’t make it to the main draw. Hence, he is the top seed in the qualifying draw. World No.106, Daniel Elahi Galan is seeded second while Denis Novak comes in as the third seed. The other player to look out for is Carlos Alcaraz who is in sublime form and comes in as the 7th seed.

There are three Indians in the men’s draw. Sumit Nagal, India’s No.1 tennis players is seeded 27th and will face Roberto Marcora of Italy in the first round on Tuesday. Prajnesh Gunneswaran is the 32nd seed and will take on Oscar Otte and Ramkumar Ramanathan will be taking on Michael Mmoh of the USA.

In the women’s side of the draw, Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva is the top seed followed by Aliona Bolsova and Liudmila Samsonova. Other big names include Timea Babos and Sara Errani. India’s No.1 singles player, Ankita Raina also makes the cut and will take on Arina Rodionova in the first round on Monday.

Expected Schedule for Qualifiers:

  • May 24- First Round
  • May 25- First Round
  • May 26- Second Round
  • May 27- Third Round

The qualifying matches will start from 10:30 a.m. local time and will go on till late evening. While Star Sports is the official broadcaster for the 2021 French Open in the Indian Subcontinent, it is unlikely that they will live stream the Qualifying competition.
