Casper Ruud vs Benoit Paire: Preview

Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud

The Norwegian is coming into this match having played nine games on the clay this season, with 15 wins and four defeats. The 22-year-old made an incredible start by reaching the semifinals of Monte Carlo Masters, and later also made the semifinals of Madrid Masters, before Matteo Berrettini beat him in straight sets. A week ago, Ruud also captured his first clay title of 2021 by beating Denis Shapovalov in Geneva in straight sets. He made the quarterfinals of French Open in 2020, and after his incredible run on the dirt this season, better results are expected from him in Paris going ahead.

On the other hand, the French man is coming into this tournament with a poor season under his belt, with nine losses and only two victories on clay. Besides his poor form, he has also got into several controversies which has reflected on his approach to tennis. He has never got past the round of 16 at Roland Garros and that is highly unlikely to be bettered in 2021.

Ruud has already beaten big names—Stefanos Tstisipas, Diego Schwartzman, Shapovalov and Fabio Fognini this season, owing to which he is high on confidence entering Roland Garros. Meanwhile, his mercurial opponent seems to be disturbed by form and other mental issues. Not much of a resistance is expected from Paire in this contest. A straight forward win for the Norwegian will be the order on Sunday.

Match Prediction: Casper Ruud should win in three sets.
