Sofia Kenin has been handed a nightmare first round draw at the French Open as she will face 2017 Roland Garros Champion Jelena Ostapenko. To her dismay, the American has been in terrible form this Clay season.

She is yet to win on Clay in 2021 in the three tournaments she has played. In Stuttgart and Rome, she lost to Anett Kontaveit and Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets and has looked completely out of form.

As for her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko has been in decent form all season. She reached the quarter-final of the Italian Open two weeks back and defeated the likes of Johanna Konta and Angelique Kerber before losing to finalist Karolina Pliskova.

This will be the second meeting between the duo. Ostapenko leads the H2H 1-0. She won the first time they met at the Fed Cup qualifiers in 2020.

Things don’t look good for last year’s finalist, Sofia Kenin. Despite being very good on Clay, she just doesn’t seem to have momentum this year. In Rome, she struggles a lot with her serve and hit too many unforced errors from the baseline.

The only thing that favors her is the past record. Her last outing in Paris 8 months ago was a good one as she was just a match away from lifting the trophy. But getting past Ostapenko will be a tough challenge for her. The Latvian star has shown glimpses of tremendous form this season and will look to trust her lethal backhand against Kenin. This should be the match to look out for in the first round.

Prediction: Ostapenko to upset Kenin in three sets.
