Cristian Garin is set to play in his 9th Clay tournament of the season as the Chilean enters the Bastad Open 2021 as the 2nd seeded player. Garin’s only title of the season came on the Clay courts at the 2021 Chile Open in Santiago. Since then he has made two more quarter-final appearances on Clay but has not gone past the last-8.

Garin will be playing in the Bastad Open for the 4th time and is into the main-draw for the 2nd time after making it into the main-draw for the first time in 2019. With the 2020 season affected by the Pandemic, the tournament was not held and now the Chilean enters as the 2nd seed.

Pedro Martinez will be playing in his 7th ATP Clay tournament of the season and 9th overall as he played 2 Challenger tournaments as well on the surface. Martinez is however yet to make it into the quarter-finals on Clay in the ATP tournaments while he did make it to the last-8 in the 2021 Zagreb Challenger.

The Spaniard is playing in the Bastad Open for the 2nd time and is into the main-draw for the first time as he faced defeat in the first qualifying round at the 2018 Bastad Open.

This will be their 2nd career meeting and 1st on Grass which took place at the recently concluded Wimbledon 2021 where the duo met in the 3rd round. Garin won the match in 4-sets and leads their head-to-head tie 1-0.

Pedro Martinez will come into the tie with a career Clay record of 272-134 and a season record of 16-14 which includes his 12-9 record of the season on the surface in both the ATP and Challenger tournaments. He comes into the tie with a straight-set victory in the first round and will look to cause problems for Garin.

Garin will take the court as the favourite for this clash as he comes in with a great form on the surface this season. He has a career Clay record of 267-141 and is 13-7 for the season on Clay. He is 16-10 across all surfaces this season and will be playing his first match of the tournament having received a bye in the first round. However, fresh from Wimbledon 2021, it will be a test for Garin as he changes surfaces quickly.
