Who would have predicted before the start of the tournament that two teenagers from the women’s draw will be headlining the finals of the 2021 US Open?

That said, strange and funny things do happen in the world of sport as Emma Raducanu of Great Britain and Leylah Fernandez of Canada have proved this year in New York.

Both women have not only been the two best players on show over the past fortnight, but the two teenage girls will also be featuring in their maiden Grand Slam final on September 11.

Raducanu has not only become only the third woman ever ranked outside the top 100 to reach a US Open finals, but the 18-year-old is also now the first qualifier in the women’s game to reach the finals at the Flushing Meadows.

Dazzled and impressed by the youngster’s performance at the US open, former Canadian-born, British player, Greg Rusedski couldn’t hold his excitement levels, as he took to twitter and expressed his delight.

“Didn’t see this coming with Emma Raducanu. Thought this was going to be a tight and tough match. At the moment very one-sided. This looks like the performance of someone who is going to be a world number 1 and multiple grand slam champion. Wow. Great to watch. Great attitude and personality,” the former World No.4 tweeted.

Raducanu will be British No.1

It is also interesting to note that Raducanu who shot to fame at the 2021 Wimbledon Champions is only appearing in her third Grand Slam. Although she might be ranked 150 in the world, the Brit is expected to break into the top-50 for the first time in her young career. Moreover, she is also guaranteed of becoming the top-ranked player of Great Britain, come Monday, 12 September.

It is also not to be forgotten that Raducanu is yet to drop a set in this year’s US Open, which also included the qualifying rounds. If she is able to win her maiden Grand Slam, then Raducanu will approximately be rewarded with $2.5m.
