“Happy to be part of the history of tennis” Alexander Zverev reacts to his marathon match with Jenson Brooksby
Alexander Zverev
Defending champion Alexander Zverev had to empty his arsenal to start his title defence at the 2022 Acapulco Open. Up against American Jenson Brooksby, Zverev was forced to put in a massive shift to claim the win and advance into the second round. Zverev won the match 3-6, 7-6(10), 6-2 after 3 hours and 20 minutes on one of the longest days on the Center Court of the tournament.
While the second lasted for nearly 2 hours (111 minutes) with Brooksby unable to capitalise on the match points he had available, the little window of opportunity was enough for Zverev to push the match into the decider set. The match will be known for the latest finish on the ATP Tour with Zverev claiming the match points at 4:54 AM local time.
With the previous two matches also ending after the 3-hour mark, Zverev and Brooksby started their match at 1:33 AM local time and battled it out till it was nearly dawn in Mexico. The final set between the match began at 4:08 AM with Zverev having saved 2 match points already and despite cramping, he closed out the third set quickly to finish the long day that saw 3 matches totalling nearly 10 hours back-to-back at the Acapulco Open.
“There, right now, I’m happy to have won. I don’t know how Jenson feels about himself, but I know it must be particularly difficult. Despite everything, I am happy to be part of the history of tennis. It was an incredible battle, an intense match and I hope a lot of success is to come for me in this tournament,” said Zverev after claiming the win as reported by Welovetennis.fr.
An all-German clash for Alexander Zverev in the second round
Zverev will now take on countryman Peter Gojowczyk in the second round with Peter coming into the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima in the first round. It will be the third meeting between the two Germans and their second in the Acapulco Open having previously played in the Round of 16 in 2018.
