Daniil Medvedev, the world No. 2 on the Tour, has warned his peers that Nick Kyrgios “is still young” and capable of producing big results.

Nick Kyrgios has had a fairytale run this year if we overlook all of his questionable actions. He won the Australian Open 2022 Doubles with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. Following that, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells 2022 tournament, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal. Afterwards, before dragging himself into a contentious topic, the six-time ATP winner advanced to the Round of 16 in the Miami Open.

Daniil Medvedev, who had lost his No. 1 ranking after a shocking third-round loss at Indian Wells, arrived in Miami ready to restore it. To recover the top ranking from Novak Djokovic, Medvedev needed to make it to the Miami semifinals at the very least. However, unfortunately for him, he was unable to do so after losing a quarterfinal match to Hubert Hurkacz.

When it comes to Kyrgios, the 26-year-old said, “I don’t consider Nick as an old guy. I think he is still young and as we see, he has a lot of potential to make some crazy results.”

“Even better than he did before if he already did some good ones. I think it’s great,” He went on to add about the Aussie who will take a break after Houston and once again won’t play the entire clay season.

The Russian tennis sensation unveiled on Saturday that he had hernia surgery and will miss the rest of the clay season, including the French Open. The 26-year-old acknowledged that he had been playing with a tiny hernia for several months and that he and his team had agreed to have surgery to correct the problem. Medvedev confirmed his departure from the court for “1-2 months” on social media, meaning that he will most likely miss the Roland Garros in May.

The US Open winner is projected to lose 790 points due to his absence from the clay-court season, bringing his total to 7,620 from 8,410. Novak Djokovic, the world number one, will have to protect 840 points in the coming months. If Djokovic fails to win the Serbia Open and does not reach the final of at least one of the three clay Masters 1000s events, Medvedev will dethrone him.
