World No.4 Alexander Zverev once again proved to be a vital cog in Team Europe’s wheel as they won the 2021 edition of the Laver Cup 14-1 in Boston. In the process, Team Europe won their fourth consecutive title over Team World.
The German interestingly happens to be the only active player to have featured in all the Laver Cup editions till now, since its inception in 2017. Moreover, with the absence of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Zverev was arguably the most experienced player out there.
Living up to the reputation, the 24-year-old notched by three crucial wins for Team Europe in their three-day campaign at Boston. After losing in the doubles event on the first day, Zverev won his three-set, gruelling battle against American, John Isner. Later, Zverev also teamed up with Russia’s Andrey Rublev to win two more doubles ties for his side.
Speaking at the post-tournament media conference, the 2020 US Open finalist shared some interesting learnings that he and his team discovered about one another, during their stay in Boston.
From Austria’s Casper Rudd versatility to Rublev’s candid approach, Zverev said, “We learned that Caper (Ruud) is not only a clay court player, but can also win matches on hard court. I also thought that I was the one who says what’s on my mind, but we learned that Andrey (Rublev) is at a different level than me. He literally says what he thinks.”
The German also reflected on some useful insights about Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and World No.2 Daniil Medvedev.
“We also learned that Matteo after a tough day at work loses his voice immediately. We also learned that Daniil has the hardest forehand on the tour, when he is falling on the ground.”
Laver Cup, London Dreams
Before Concluding, the Tokyo Games gold medalist also shared his views on the 2022 edition of the cup, which is scheduled to take place in London.
“In general, it was a great week. I think everybody enjoyed it. We are looking forward to London, next year. We have to pass the three champions (Rafa, Roger and Novak in this team in London, so I think, me, Stef (Tsitsipas) and Daniil are very much looking forward in that stadium. Yeah, we want to represent Team Europe again and we will have fun, and hopefully a lot of this team will be there again.”
