“He is the real deal,” Andy Roddick is blown away by Carlos Alcaraz after his Miami Open win

Following his straight-sets triumph over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Miami Open, Andy Roddick compared Carlos Alcaraz to tennis legend Andre Agassi, calling the Spanish sensation the “real deal.” Alcaraz has been predicted to have a strong career in the sport for a long time, and 2022 is shaping up to be his breakthrough year.

After defeating the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Diego Schwartzman at the Rio Open last month, the 18-year-old became the youngest player to win an ATP 500 title. And he had a terrific run at Indian Wells before falling in the semi-finals to Rafael Nadal. The young Spaniard has maintained his strong form this week in Miami, defeating Marton Fucsovics and Marin Cilic with ease. Thus, he was able to set up a tantalising tie with Tsitsipas.

Andy Roddick, the former world No. 1, was quite astonished by what he witnessed from Carlos Alcaraz against Tsitsipas.

In an interview with Tennis Channel, the one-time Grand Slam winner said, “This guy just moves incredibly. Normally you have to grow into your movement a little bit. He doesn’t need much time to fire on the forehand. Most of the guys with huge forehands need two feet under them to give it a ride. This guy can turn it on real quick almost like Andre Agassi used to. You would hit a big ball to him and it would come back just as fast.”

Roddick also said Alcaraz is “no joke” and performs like an “animal” in response to his remarkable victory. “This guy is no joke. He is the real deal and I don’t know if this is an upset. I don’t know if we’ve seen someone this young who you kind of expect to win matches like this maybe often. This guy is an animal.”
