“He might leave the window open for a return” Paul Annacone believes Juan Martin Del Potro will make a U-turn on his retirement

Juan Martin Del Potro bid an emotional farewell to his fans during his last match at the Argentina Open 2022. He lost his comeback match against compatriot Federico Delbonis in the opening round, in what might potentially be the last match of his career.
The Argentinian was playing his first match in two-and-half years and was visibly emotional during the last game of the match. He couldn’t cap off his comeback to the tour with a win, but to play the match itself was a huge thing for the former US Open champion, who had missed years of tennis due to multiple injuries. After the match, Del Potro revealed that it was hard for him to play through the pain, but he wanted to bid a farewell while playing on the court and not in a press conference.
The former World No.3 hung his headband on the net after his match, which many believed to be his own version of saying farewell. But Del Potro said he will decide if he plays tennis again after assessing his knee injury. There might be a potential for a possible return as the 33-year-old revealed if the condition of his knee gets better, there is a chance he might play again.

Famed tennis coach Paul Annacone, who coached many top-level tennis players including Pete Sampras and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, weighed in his thought about Del Potro and was all-praise for the Argentinian and said he was one of the most honorable players on tour. He also talked about Del Potro’s touching gesture to put his headband on the net, to signify possibly the end of his career and his own way of wrapping things up.
But Annacone also believes that there is still a window open for Del Potro’s potential return and he is not yet done playing tennis.
“Just look at that face full of emotion (about Del Potro’s last match). Just one of the most honorable guys on tour, so well-liked. That was a tough one, watching him put the headband on the net as he wrapped it up and might gonna leave the window open in tennis (for a return)” said Annacone on Tennis Channel.
Fellow host, Brett Haber also echoed his statements and said Del Potro to “Get healthy again and come on out.“
