20-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic has been the talk of the town since the last 10 days. Djokovic was granted medical exemptions to compete at the 2022 Australian Open after it was announced that only vaccinated players will be allowed to play at the first grand slam of 2022.

The Serb isn’t vaccinated and hence needed exemption to travel to Australia. But chaos started as soon as Djokovic landed in Melbourne. He was detained at the airport for several hours and later, his visa was cancelled. The defending Australian Open champ decided to challenge the same in judicial court and on Monday earlier this week, he won the case and was declared a ‘free man’ by the judge.

Djokovic’s former coach, Boris Becker believes that despite being a mental beast, it will be very difficult for Djokovic to perform in Melbourne given his lack of preparation. Becker also added that Djokovic will be received by a lot of boos and whistles but he’s used to it so it won’t be a problem.

“Djokovic must still be in shock after the last six days. He’s a remarkable young man, his mind is incredible. He went to practice Monday at midnight, that’s how he is. He is someone different. He sees the world through a different set of eyes. You may not agree with everything he does, but you have to respect him. And obviously his preparation is more than bad. I don’t think he’s ever been in such a bad position the week before a Grand Slam, but it is. I’m sure there will be a few boos and whistles, but he’s used to it,” Becker said.

Former multiple major champion Becker said that Djokovic is a street fighter and will soon win the crowd over once the tournament starts.

“He’s always been a street fighter who had to fight for the public’s trust, and it was quite fascinating during last year’s US Open final when he finally backed it up. The crowd will be tough with him, but with every game he starts he will win over the crowd and they will cheer him on again. But he’s going to have a tough first week,” Becker added.

As soon as Novak Djokovic’s visa was reinstated, he went straight to Rod Laver Arena to practice with his team. He is continuously practicing in Melbourne Park and looks ready to defend his Australian Open crown.

Djokovic is confirmed as the top seed for the tournament and will once again start as the favorite to defend his title and win a record breaking 21st grand slam.
