“Discussing mental health has brought attention to her”- John McEnroe worried about Naomi Osaka’s future
Naomi Osaka
The defending champion at the Australian Open 2022, Naomi Osaka lost her third-round match to Amanda Anisimova on 21st of January 2022, with the score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7. She played well in the earlier rounds of the tournament but the third round came as a setback for her. This year the Japanese also participated in the Melbourne Summer Set tournament where she won the semifinals by defeating Andrea Petkovic with a score of 6-1, 7-5. But she lost the quarter-finals to Veronika Kudermetova.
Last year at the same Australian Open tournament Naomi won the title by defeating American tennis star Jennifer Brady with the score 6-4, 6-3. However, this year it seems as if the tennis star is not in good form and the reason is supposed to be her mental health. Naomi opened up about her mental health some time back and she also said that this was the reason why she has not been attending any press conferences.
John McEnroe on Naomi Osaka
What Naomi said on mental health has drawn a lot of attention towards her and many tennis players and experts expressed their opinions on the matter. Among these was former World No.1, John McEnroe. John is a former American tennis legend. He has the highest career ranking of World No.1 and has 77 career titles to his name out of which seven are Grand Slam titles.
According to the legend what Naomi said will have consequences for her. Opening up about mental health is a good thing but it has drawn her a lot of attention. She has to manage losing matches and will she play in Wimbledon and is she going to play more matches before the French Open?
“It is an extremely difficult position she has in some ways put herself in. Bringing the concept of mental health to the forefront of the conversation is a great idea, but it has brought attention to her. However, now we’re going to be discussing in more detail how is she going to handle losing match points? How is she going to handle losing early? Is she going to play a lot of events before the French Open? Will she play Wimbledon? She is going to have a lot more light on her and she is going to have to be prepared to handle that,” McEnroe said.
