Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were two of the fiercest rivals on the court on the WTA Tour. The two former World No. 1 player always met in the business end of the tournaments. The two players were often in the headlines for rivalling each other for titles and while Serena was the more dominant one in their meetings, the match-up between the two players was always a treat.
Sharapova recently appeared as a guest in the ‘Never Stand Still’ Podcast where she was asked questions about her rivalry and relationship with Serena. While the two remained bitter rivals on the court, towards the end of Maria’s career, the two seemed to have developed a good relationship between them having shared the stage for such a long time.
“We just saw each other in a match in New York a few weeks ago. We were discussing how old we are now compared to the Wimbledon final. She was like, ‘Oh goodness we are up there.’ And I was like, ‘Woah! You still got it girl,” said Sharapova during the podcast believing that Serena can make another run at the title to match Margaret Court‘s tally of 24 Grand Slams with Serena currently on 23.
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams’ rivalry
Serena and Maria met for the first time in the 2004 Miami Open with Serena winning the 4th round clash. They next clashed in the finals of the 2004 Wimbledon where Serena was the defending champion and the favourite to win the title. Maria however shocked the world by defeating Serena in straight-sets dropping only 5 sets in what was then called the ‘most stunning upset in memory’.
They clashed again in the finals of the 2004 WTA Year-End championships with Maria winning in 3-sets to take a 2-1 lead. That was however the last time Maria won as Serena won their next 21 straight meetings with 7 of those in finals of various tournaments including the Australian Open (2007, 2015), French Open (2013), WTA Finals (2012) and the Gold medal match at the 2012 London Olympics.
