Paris Masters 2021: Hubert Hurkacz storms into the semis, books last spot at the ATP Finals

Hubert Hurkacz is on a roll! The 10th ranked player from Poland has entered the semifinals of the ongoing Rolex Paris Masters 2021.

In the quarters, the Pole defeated James Duckworth of Australia in three sets. After losing the first set in 2-6, the Australian put up a fight in the second set. It was a close contest, that he won in a tie-breaker (7⁷-6⁴). After this, the playing field was even. But Hurkacz refused to bow down, and put his best foot forward in the third set where the duo were tied at 5-5. Hubert Hurkacz won the set 7-5, and sealed his spot in the semis.

This win has not only brought the 24 year-old closer to his fifth title, but has also propelled him to his first ATP Finals. The prestigious event that is held at the end of the year, grants participation to the top 8 players in men’s tennis. The Paris Masters being the last Masters 1000 event on the calendar, sees participation from the creamy layer of men’s tennis, all of whom fight for a spot in the ATP Finals. This year, Hurkacz clinched the last available spot with the points he gained from his quarterfinal win at Paris.

Hubert Hurkacz’s reaction to qualifying for the ATP Finals

In a post-match interview, Hurkacz said “It is crazy. The match was so hard today, knowing that I had to win the match” . He added that it was a childhood dream of his to play at the venerated tournament “It feels incredible… going to Turin is a dream. Growing up as a kid, seeing all those top guys playing in the Finals, it’s inspiring. Now being among them, it’s very special. Being qualified for the ATP Finals is a great achievement for me. As a child, you dream about it and you never know if it’s gonna be possible. I’m very happy.”

He told Tennis Channel “It’s obviously a dream come true to be at the Finals. I played at the Next Gen Finals so I thought to myself maybe one day I would get to the main one. I’m just super happy.”

Hubert Hurkacz will be the second-ever Pole to qualify for the ATP Finals.
