Hubert Hurkacz continues his dream run at the Wimbledon 2021, as he makes it into his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final. Hurkacz was up against World No. 2 and the 2nd seeded Daniil Medvedev and thrived in a thrilling 5-setter clash played over 2 days.

Hurkacz and Medvedev were stranded at 6-2, 6-7(2) 6-3, 3-4 when the rain forced them off the court with the match continuing on 6th July, Tuesday in what was the only Men’s Singles match played on the day. Hurkacz eventually won the match 2-6, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in 3 hours and 2 minutes over the two days to make it into the last-8 of the Championships.

In the quarter-finals, Hurkacz will be playing Roger Federer who qualified for his 18th Wimbledon quarter-final with a straight-set win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego. This will be the 2nd meeting between Hurkacz and Federer with the Swiss having won their previous clash.

Answering a journalist question in his post-match press conference whether he is nervous playing against Federer, the Polish youngster said, “No,” and in the follow-up question when he was asked if that’s because Federer is his hero, Hurkacz replied again “No,” and laughed after that.

Hubert Hurkacz was in great form in the first week at the Championships this year, reaching the 4th round without dropping a single set before he met Daniil Medvedev. Hurkacz defeated Lorenzo Musetti, Marcos Giron and Alexander Bublik in straight-sets in the first 3 rounds.

Medvedev however defeated Hurkacz in the first set itself to push the Pole on the back foot, who then staged a great comeback to win the 2nd, 4th and the 5th set to defeat the Russian who stood a chance to become the World No. 1 had he gone all the way and won the Wimbledon 2021 title.

The Wimbledon has been a great week for the Polish youngster who came to Wimbledon without a single win on Grass in his previous 2 tournaments he played at the ATP Stuttgart Open 2021 and then at the ATP Halle Open 2021. He had come into the Championships with a career Grass record of 6-10 and not many expected him to make it till the quarter-finals.

Hubert will now meet Roger Federer in the quarter-finals and will play on the Centre Court for the 3rd time after making his debut on the Centre Court in the 2019 Wimbledon in the 3rd round against Novak Djokovic where he lost in 4-sets.
