“I always had a plan” Serena Williams is ‘prepared’ for her retirement

Former World No. 1 and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams continues to recover from the injury she picked up during her first-round match at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Serena made multiple attempts to return to the Tour during the season but she was not match-fit and had to miss the entire season out.
With many hoping the American superstar will return to the Tour in 2022, their hopes were squashed when Williams announced she will not start her season in Australia and will be absent from the 2022 Australian Open as well. With a long absence, Serena’s rank dropped to World No. 247 and will continue to move down till she returns to the Tour.
With a doubt looming whether this is the end of the road for the American, in her latest interview with ET, the 40-year old talked about her retirement plans as her comeback gets delayed once again. Serena is already well into business, having launched a direct-to-consumer clothing line, S by Serena, in 2018, and signed a first-look TV deal with Amazon Studios last year that includes a docuseries about her.
“I am prepared for that day, I’ve been prepared for that day for over a decade. So, I’ve always — if you’ve seen King Richard you know that my dad always said you got to prepare, so I’ve been prepared for that. You know, at the end of the day, I think it’s really important to always have a plan and that’s kind of what I did. I always had a plan.
“It is a balancing act and some days it’s harder than the others. It was definitely tougher because I’m still a mom and I’m still a wife and I’m still, you know, I want to be able to spend time and I like to be good at things. I want to be the best mom, you know, and I just have a wonderful team around me. There are days that are overwhelming but I’m just like, OK, I just got to like, figure it out and just make it work,” said Serena who has nearly 20 corporate partners and investments in 66 startups.
Serena Williams plans to expand her family
Serena married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in November 2017 and the couple was blessed with a daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr who was born in September 2017. With Serena nearing the end of her career, she also discussed her plans to have more kids.
“I definitely want to have more kids, it’s just like, balance is key, you know, and just trying to find that balance,” she shares. “I don’t know, it’s always like, OK, are we ready? And I know the clock is ticking so I’m just like OK, I need to figure out when that’s going to be, but hopefully soon when I will feel no pressure,” added Serena during her interview with ET.
Having missed 2 months of action in the 2022 season as well, the tennis fraternity is hoping for the American’s comeback as soon as possible and be once again entertained by one of the greatest players of all time.
