World No. 11 Carlos Alcaraz capped off his succesful trip to the USA with a title in his bag on the way home. Having reached the semi-finas of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, Alcaraz went further ahead at the 2022 Miami Masters where he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals in straight-sets to clinch his first Masters title and third career title.

Thee 18-year old Alcaraz was playing in his first title and despite a nervy start, he managed to go on to win the title and become the 3rd youngest Masters champion and the youngest Miami Masters champion overtaking Novak Djokovic‘s record set in 2007 when the Serbian was 19 years old.

With an ATP-250, ATP-500 and now an ATP-1000 title in his kitty, Alcaraz was asked about his ambition to win a Grand Slam and the teenagter did not flinch in saying that winning a major is his next target and further went on to say that he believes it will come this year itself.

“I would say yes. I am prepared, I have confidence, the level, the physical and the mentality to be able to win. Maybe not Roland Garros, but a ‘Grand Slam’ this year I do see myself prepared. And I’m not afraid to say it. I know there are great players: there is Rafa, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Djokovic… All the best and the favourites. But I feel ready to win one, although you don’t know when it might come and the same thing happens with number one. I hope it arrives as soon as possible,” said Alcaraz in his latest interview with Marca.

Having played at all Slams, Alcaraz’s best run so far came in the 2021 US Open when he reached the quarter-finals and became the youngest quarter-finalist at the Flushing Meadows in the Open Era and youngest quarter-finalist in a men’s Grand Slam in over 32 years. An leg injury forced him to retire from the quarter-finals or he might have reached further ahead as well.

In the Australian Open, he reached the 3rd round this year only to be defeated by eventual semi-finalist and Italian No. 1 Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling 5-set battle that could have gone either way. At the Wimbledon, he won on his debut in 2021 but lost in the second round to then World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev.

At the French Open, Alcaraz made his main-draw debut in 2021 and after winning his qualifiers, he reached the third round. At the upcoming 2022 French Open, the teen is already being touted as one of the title contenders as Clay is his favourite surface and having won two titles already on the surface and two titles this season already, he can certainly challenge for the major.
