Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Former World No. 5 and currently ranked 247th in the world, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is playing the final few tournaments of his career as he has announced his decision to call it quits after the 2022 French Open. Tsonga, who will turn 37 in a few days has been battling injuries for a long time and failure to regain complete fitness that will extend his career, the Frenchman has decided to retire from the sport.
Tsonga’s final lap began at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters where he played Marin Cilic in the first round having received a wildcard for the main draw. Cilic however turned out to be the better one for the day as the Croatian won 6-2, 6-2 to pick his 7th win over Tsonga in their 11th meeting on the Tour.
As Tsonga left the court to a guard of honour presented to him by the ball kids on the Tour, Jo expressed his emotions later having played his final match in the Monte-Carlo Country Club on the Rainier lll Court.
“I will not return as a player, but I will certainly return as a spectator. Unfortunately, I would have preferred to be a bit more competitive, but Marin played very well. He was aggressive straight away, I didn’t expect to have such a good player on the pitch today. I’m sad that it wasn’t more of a match because it was my last Monte Carlo,” said Tsonga as reported by Eurosport France.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga yet to be confirmed as a wildcard for the French Open
While Tsonga has announced that he will stop after the 2022 French Open, his request for a wildcard into the main-draw is pending approval from the Roland Garros. Being a two-time semi-finalist and a former World No. 5 along with being the local boy, it is just a matter of time before Tsonga gets the confirmation for being one of the wildcards into the final Grand Slam of his career.
