“I am starting to flourish again,” Stefanos Tsitsipas finds himself back out on the court “pain-free”

Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ elbow injury was so severe that he contemplated withdrawing from tennis. However, following a successful surgery, he stated that he is now fit to compete in Miami Open 2022. The 23-year-old’s doctor was taken aback by how fast he recovered from surgery late last year.

However, the Greek star finds himself back out on the court “pain-free” after recently struggling with a tricky elbow injury.

“I wasn’t at a very good state mentally”- Stefanos Tsitsipas

Reminiscing his injury, in an interview with ATP, the Greek said, “I honestly was at a point where I wasn’t able to serve forehands and backhands and in ways, I wasn’t able to enjoy because I wasn’t able to play in pain-free and not have my mind on my elbow. Things like this kind of chew you in a way mentally.”

The 23-year-old also said that upon realising the benefits of staying healthy, he is trying his best and starting to “flourish again”. “I realised how important it is to be healthy and to be competing pain-free, and then I take things from there. I wasn’t at a very good state mentally for a very long time and I am glad I’m past that and starting to flourish again and begin from scratch.”

However, now playing pain-free, Stefanos Tsitsipas’ resolution is to stay happy and appreciative. All he wants to do is enjoy the time on the court with people around him and make the most of it. “Going into every tournament, things are different. I need to probably be in the same set of mind, be happy, be grateful, be appreciative and enjoy the time on court with the people around me.”

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is in action for the first time this week, taking against American qualifier J.J. Wolf, after recovering from an elbow injury. The two originally met in February in Acapulco, and Tsitsipas will be hoping for a repeat performance — the Greek won 6-1, 6-0 in just 47 minutes in Mexico. However, Wolf, the world No. 167, will be full of confidence after defeating Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in straight sets in the first round in his Miami debut.
