Newly crowned World No. 2 Iga Swiatek continues to impress on the Tour as the 20-year old wins her 3rd career WTA-1000 title and second on the trot. Up against Maria Sakkari, who also reaches her career-high ranking of World No. 3, Swiatek won the match 6-4, 6-1 to win the 2022 Indian Wells Open.

The win makes Iga the first WTA player to pick 20 wins in the season and the Polish youngster also has two massive titles to show along with it as she is now on an 11-match unbeaten streak that began at the 2022 Qatar Open in Doha. With only three defeats so far this season, Iga deservingly moves to the 2nd spot on the rankings.

“Well, I don’t know yet. The day has been so crazy it’s pretty hard to realise that I will be second in the world in rankings. I don’t have much experience playing in the wind but for sure today I couldn’t play 100% of the tactics that I had, I had to adjust more and sometimes just push the ball back in and play safe cause I had the feeling that the first one to take a risk is going to miss.

“You have to balance that with being aggressive and pushing your opponent so it was pretty tough and it was the first match I played in conditions like that. So it was pretty crazy and I am so happy that I did it. Balancing my tennis and being able to rest because the schedule is tight so I have been working pretty hard last season.

“Some losses were pretty disappointing so I feel like the hard work is really paying off and I can continue doing that. But for sure, the consistency I wanted to reach last year, I reached on some level but this year, I can play even better and play finals even regularly,” said Iga speaking with Tennis Channel.

So far in her short career, Iga has played in 6 finals. Her first finals appearance came in the 2019 Ladies Open Lugano where she lost in 3-sets. Post that, her next final was the 2020 French Open which became her first career title and her first major. With a WTA-500 title in Adelaide last season, Iga has since then won 3 WTA-1000 titles.

With big trophies already to her name, the 20-year old is yet to win a WTA-250 Tour title but that won’t be far away from the young champion. With the next tournament being the WTA-1000 Miami Open, the Pole will look to claim a hattrick of titles in the biggest tiers of the WTA Tour.
