“I can’t complain when I’m in Mexico” Defending champion Leylah Fernandez storms into the finals in Monterrey

Leylah Fernandez

Defending champion and the 2nd seed at the 2022 Monterrey Open, Leylah Fernandez raced past Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia to move into the finals of the tournament as she looks to defend her only title won so far in her short but promising career. Leylah won the semi-finals clash 6-1, 6-4 in just 72 minutes and is now on a 9-match winning streak at the tournament.

Leylah also improved on her record in the semi-finals and is now 4-0 in semi-final clashes. Having not conceded a single break opportunity during the entire first set, Beatriz came out strong in the second set breaking Leylah in the first game itself. Leylah returned the favour at 2-1 and then the Southpaw held her serve throughout the set to wrap up the proceedings and move into the finals for the second year running.

“I just enjoy playing tennis in front of fans who love the sport as much as I do. They cheer me on, they cheer my opponents on, in tough moments the energy on court is so positive. I can’t complain at all when I’m in Mexico. My time here has always been amazing, I’ve always had fun, I have fond memories. I can’t wait to play more matches here in Mexico, hopefully over the next couple of years,” said Leylah after winning the semi-final tie during her media interaction.

In a battle of seeds, Leylah will now be up against 5th seed Camila Osorio for the title match. Both the youngsters are looking for their second career titles and the first of the season. Both players have dropped a set each on their way to the finals, Leylah had to defeat Qinwen Zheng in 3-sets in the Round of 16 match while Camila beat top-seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals in 3-sets.

It will be the first meeting between the duo and also the first final of the season for them. Camila defeated Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-4, 6-4 to enter the finals, her first finals in Monterrey and her 3rd career title having defeated Tamara Zidansek at the Bogota Open last season.
