British teenager Emma Raducanu is amongst the most popular players on the current women’s tour. She stunned the world last year by becoming the first-ever qualifier in tennis history to win a grand slam. She won the US Open without dropping a set- speaking volumes of her dominance. But Raducanu hasn’t delivered after her US Open win.

She has consistently lost in the opening rounds of tournaments and has looked completely rattled at times. She bowed out of the second round of the Australian Open before losing in the opening round at Guadalajara. She also didn’t have a good Golden Swing going into the clay-court swing.

Many consider that ‘lack of focus’ amidst all the glamour and brand deals is the reason for Raducanu’s bad performance. Given her British nationality and multi-cultured heritage, Raducanu is one of the most marketable athletes and hence signs multiple brand deals. But Raducanu lashed out at those critics and said that what people see on social media is quite misleading.

“If you just see – like on the news or on social media – me signing this deal or that deal, I feel like it’s quite misleading,” Raducanu said, who is expected to add a major high-street bank to her portfolio.

She reinstated that she trains for 5-6 hours a day and is at the club, training, for 12 hours a day. But she said that whenever she posts a casual picture, all of a sudden people think that she ain’t focused on tennis, which isn’t the case.

“Because I’m doing five or six hours a day [of training]. I’m at the club for 12 hours a day. But I throw out one post in the car on the way to practice and all of a sudden, it’s – you know – I don’t focus on tennis or whatever,” she said.

‘I think that it is unfair’: Emma Raducanu on people judging her

Raducanu further said that it’s unfair that people judge her without knowing the details but she has learned to deal with it and be a bit more insensitive to the outside noise. She added how tight her schedules are that she feels she’s doing 3-4 days every quarter for brand activities.

“I think that it is unfair, but it’s something that I have learned to deal with more and become a bit more insensitive to the outside noise. I have learned to deal with more and become a bit more insensitive to the outside noise. And at the end of the day, I feel like my days [working with commercial partners] are pretty limited. I’m not even doing crazy days. I feel like I’m doing like three or four days every quarter, so it’s really not that much,” she said.
