“I lost, I didn’t die,” Carlos Alcaraz reflects on his shocking loss at the Monte Carlo Masters to Sebastian Korda
Carlos Alcaraz
After winning the Miami Open, people had high hopes for Carlos Alcaraz at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. Some people even believed that the 18-year-old could win the tournament in Monaco. But unfortunately, Alcaraz’s journey in Monte Carlo has ended in the second round as he lost against Sebastian Korda in a three-set classic. Alcaraz lost 6(2)-7, 7(5)-6, 3-6 in a match that lasted over three hours.
While Alcaraz got a first-round bye, his opponent Korda defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round and brought some rhythm to this match against the World No.11. But Alcaraz was taken aback by Korda’s powerful strokes and the way the American mixed it up was also very amazing. Adding to that this was the Spaniard’s debut in Monte Carlo and the windy conditions of Court Rainier III did not help the 18-year-old’s cause.
Korda, who is also making his debut in this tournament came from a breakdown in the third set to force his initiative and finally seal the game and has progressed to the next round where he will either take on the winner of Marin Cilic or Taylor Fritz.
‘These losses sometimes are good to live with’: Carlos Alcaraz
Hardly anyone expected Carlos Alcaraz to bow out so early at the Monte Carlo Masters. Tennis fans expected the young Spaniard to face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. But now both of them are out and it is a chance for others to capitalise on this situation.“Well, I’m a bit disappointed with myself. I had a lot of chances to be up in the match and close to win, but, I mean, these losses sometimes is good to live. You have to play, as I said, to play matches. But I didn’t think about the expectation that the people has to me. I mean, I just focused on me and what I have to do, but as I said, you have to play on clay court more matches (smiling),” Alcaraz said after his defeat.
“I lost, didn’t die. There is a new chance to get better next week,” he added. However, Alcaraz will be back in the flow soon as he will continue getting better and will also look to adjust to different situations. Today there was a lot of wind on the court and that affected the Spaniard’s game plan ad also made him commit a few unforced errors in the third set allowing the American to take the driver’s seat in the game, which he did eventually.
Carlos Alcaraz will now feature at the Barcelona Open along with top players like Hubert Hurkacz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud and many more. Rafael Nadal will, unfortunately, miss out due to his rib injury. So the young Spaniard will get home support and will be hungry to do better after his Monte Carlo Masters disappointment.
