“I had good practice weeks but…” Dominic Thiem pulls out from the Indian Wells and Miami Masters

Dominic Thiem

Currently ranked 50th in the world, Dominic Thiem has been missed from the Tour immensely since he had to retire mid-match at the 2021 Mallorca Championships in June last year. Since then, the Austrian has not played a competitive match having injured his wrist that was feared to require surgery.

While the Austrian was lucky to not need surgery eventually, his comeback has however been delayed since then. Many expecting a start to his season in Australia, Dominic announced that he will start his season after the 2022 Australian Open missing the entire Australian Leg of the Tour. With few Clay tournaments played in the month of February in the South American continent, Thiem was scheduled to make his season debut there but pulled out just a few hours before his match.

As he keeps making his fans await his return, he announces yet another tournament withdrawal deciding to not play the upcoming 2022 Indian Wells Masters and the 2022 Miami Masters, the only events on the Tour in the month of March. This could further see him move down in the rankings being currently on the brink of exiting the Top-50.

“Hello everybody. I wanted to give a quick update, I had really good practice weeks. The wrist is perfectly fine and the hand is getting better and better but still, I have decided to pull out from Indian Wells and Miami to start on the clay courts. It is still the surface where I feel the most comfortable so I think it is a perfect time to start there.

“I would have loved to play in the states but I am really sorry for my fans and obviously, last time I played here in Indian Wells, I won the tournament so I love to play in the States and I cant wait to be back soon,” said Dominic through his Instagram stories announcing his withdrawal.

With the 2020 editions cancelled for both the tournaments, the 2021 edition of Miami Masters was played as per the schedule while the Indian Wells was played in October, post the conclusion of the 2021 US Open. Dominic’s injury in Mallorca ended his season and he was forced to let go of his Indian Wells trophy won in 2019 without any title defence.

Thiem had defeated Roger Federer in the finals of the 2019 Indian Wells Masters but surrendered in his first match (second round) of the 2019 Miami Masters. With three years since his last visit, the Austrian’s fans in the USA will surely be waiting for him to return soon.
