“I have all the physical attributes and the game” Coco Gauff is now prepared to ‘Go for Slams’
Coco Gauff
World No. 17 Coco Gauff is playing in her 3rd full season and celebrated her 18th birthday just a few days ago. The American teenager burst onto the scene with her surprise run at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships when a 15-year old Coco beat former World No. 1 and former Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the first round.
She reached the 4th round at the Championships that year, a run she replicated in 2021 as well, making consecutive runs in the second round of the Championships. She also reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open while having made the 3rd round in the 2021 US Open while reaching the 4th round at the 2020 Australian Open.
While the teen is yet to claim a title above the WTA-250, winning two career titles so far in singles while winning 4 titles in Doubles that includes a WTA-1000 title won in Qatar Open this year, Gauff feels she is now physically ready to compete and challenge for Grand Slam titles as a contender and not as an underdog.
“I feel like for me, definitely I feel like I can go far in slams. For me I think it’s more of a mental thing, when am I mentally matured enough to win one. I feel like I have all the physical attributes and the game and everything. I think that’s kind of like a lot of players on the tour, we are all pretty physically fit. We all have big serves or big forehands or some type of weapon that helps us win matches.
“I think what really sets the other players, Grand Slam champions apart from the rest is probably their mentality. I’m hoping and have been working on trying to be mentally mature to make it far in slams and hopefully win one,” said Gauff during her recent interaction with the press at the 2022 Miami Open as reported by Tennisuptodate.
Coco Gauff into the third round in Miami
In the hunt for her first singles title this season, Gauff is into the third round picking a straight-set win over Qiang Wang in the second round to start her campaign in the 2022 Miami Open this year and will now take on Shuai Zhang. Being seeded, she had a bye in the first round. Gauff is playing in Miami for the third time and has reached the third round for the first time. A good run in the tournament can see the teenager break into the Top-15 for the first time in her career.
