‘I hope he does not go to prison,’ Boris Becker’s mother pleads after the German legend was charged with four offences under Insolvency Act
Boris Becker
Once known for his exceptional tennis and personality, legendary Boris Becker is currently bankrupt and has been also found guilty of four offences under the Insolvency Act.
The unseeded German who became the Wimbledon Champion in 1985 became Britain’s favourite. He was always welcomed with a loud cheer at the centre court in Wimbledon as he won the title back again in 1986 and also again in 1989. Becker is considered one of the most stylish tennis players with an enigmatic personality.
In the closing speech of Becker’s defence barrister, Jonathan Laidlaw QC, jurors were told that although there was an element of Becker “burying his head in the sand” when it came to matters of money and finance, “some of [his] advisers were offering genuine good advice intended to be in the defendant’s best interest. They also admitted that there were others who may have simply wanted a slice of the pie his fame and fortune offered”
Becker’s time at the sport of sporting greatness. His stylish attacking tennis and his exceptional netplay will always resonate with the tennis fans of that era. He was surely the inspiration of many who are picking up a racket in this generation. But it was his lavishing lifestyle, financial mishandling and some shady allegations that have somewhat tarnished the legacy that he left behind.
The German tennis legend took up commentary and also was Novak Djokovic‘s coach for some time. During his stint with the Serb, they won seven Grand Slam titles. The 54-year-old has been accused of giving a runaround to the officials when he was in financial difficulties and was told to declare his assets. He was accused of hiding millions of pounds in assets before and after being declared bankrupt in June 2017, but Becker said he had done nothing wrong.
‘He is a decent boy overall,’ Boris Becker’s mother advocates for the German legend as he faces seven years of prison
The tennis legend will now face up to seven years of prison time after four charges under the Insolvency Act. But his emotional 86-year-old mother Elvira said that she is hoping that her son does not go to prison claiming him to be decent.
“I hope my son doesn’t have to go to prison. He’s a decent boy overall.”
Becker who currently lives in London was declared bankrupt in 2017 after he did not pay back the loan over his Mallorca estate. A jury found the popular commentator transferred £350,000 to ex-wife Barbara and separated wife Sharley so that he can avoid paying the debt. But it hardly worked out for the German tennis legend. The 54-year-old is to be sentenced on the 29th of April.
