“I should have 30 or 32 already” Serena Williams still not ready to give up on Margaret Court’s record
Serena Williams and Margaret Court
Former World No. 1 and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams continues to recover from her injury that has kept her out for nearly 8 months now. As a result of her absence, Serena is currently ranked 237th in the world and will have a long way to go before she breaks into the top ranks where she deserves to be.
The 40-year old had injured her leg in her first round match at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships where she could not complete even a set as she slipped and hurt herself and had to forfeit the game in tears. Since then, Serena has made multiple efforts to return but the injury has stood like a massive obstacle.
Many expected Serena to return at the start of the 2022 season, she announced her withdrawal from the 2022 Australian Open just a few weeks ago and missed second major on the trot. This took away yet another chance to try winning her 24th Grand Slam title and match Margaret Court‘s record who continues to remain the most decorated singles Grand Slam champion.
Serena won her 23rd major at the 2017 Australian Open and since then has reached four more Grand Slam finals but has failed to win any of them losing all in straight-sets. Her last Grand Slam final was the 2019 US Open where she lost to Bianca Andreescu post which the Pandemic and fitness issues kept her from being at her very best.
“I’m committed to me right now. I love tennis and I love what I do. Right now I just had have to commit to me. What does that mean, I don’t know but I still play tennis, I still train. But you know, I’m that kind of person who thinks honestly I should have 30 or 32 (Grand Slams). So that’s how I kind of look at it. I still haven’t done it. I should have had it, I had many opportunities to win a few more, but I couldn’t. My goal is to win another one,” said Serena during her recent interview with Christiane Amanpour.
Serena Williams eyeing a return at the 2022 French Open
Serena has hinted that she will be returning to action during the Golden Swing of the WTA Tour with the hopes of returning to Grand Slam action at the 2022 French Open. While it might not be the best of decisions given the difficulty of the surface as she is coming back from a leg injury, it could be a strategic decision to be ready for the Grass season and the 2022 Wimbledon where she stands the best chance to win a major given her dominance on the surface.
