‘I thought what Novak would do!’ Daniil Medvedev reveals how Djokovic’s mentality helped him edge past Felix Auger Aliassime in five set thriller

Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev produced a stunning comeback at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday evening, as he booked a second successive semifinal spot at Australian Open 2022. The second seed was looking all out of sorts in the opening two sets, as Felix Auger Aliassime was just one set away from victory, taking a 2-0 sets lead.

However, the Russian produced something which champions do best. He came back from behind and claimed the next three sets to continue his title charge. Medvedev eventually won in what was one of the best matches of the tournament so far, and potentially among the top ones played at Rod Laver Arena.

Daniil Medvedev won by a score-line of 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 to book a semifinal date with Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday. While speaking during the on court interview, the Russian made a cheeky reference to Novak Djokovic, much to the dismay of the Australian crowd.

Daniil Medvedev credits Novak Djokovic’s mentality for survival at Australian Open

Daniil Medvedev stated that while he was two sets down, he put himself in the shoes of Novak Djokovic and the likes of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer. His mention of Djokovic was met with a chorus of boos around the stadium, as the Serbian stirred a huge controversy prior to the Australian Open 2022.

I didn’t really know what to do so. I don’t know if people are going to like it, but I told myself, ‘What would Novak do?,’” said Medvedev. Later, he also added Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s name which was met with a huge roar of applause.

Daniil Medvedev revealed that a changed approach helped him turn things upside down in the third set. He made the Canadian work harder for his points, and made him move around the court.

“I just thought, ‘OK, I’m going to make him win it.’ If he wants to win it, he’s going to have to fight till the past point. Even if it’s 5-0, 40-0 for him, try to make him tired for the next match,” the Russian said.
