Jelena Ostapenko has had a good start to the 2022 season so far. The Latvian disappointed in the Australian Open as she exited in the third round in an admittedly very tough clash against Barbora Krejcikova. The former French Open winner then followed it up with a semi-finals appearance at the St Petersburg Open, losing to 2nd seed Annet Kontaveit. The Latvian has now gone on all the way to win the title at the Dubai Open.

Ostapenko caps off dream week with title win

After a good tournament in St Petersburg, Jelena Ostapenko went on to enjoy a dream week in Dubai as she clinched the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship title after winning the final thrashing Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets. The former French Open champion won the final in just 64 minutes.

Post the match, Latvian shared her satisfaction with her performance and the whole week in general, revealing that she was very happy with the whole week since she defeated many tough opponents on route to the title.

“I think I played really well today. In general, I’m really happy with the whole week, because it was very tough opponents I had to face every round.” – said Ostapenko on-court post the match.

Ostapenko defeated four of her fellow Grand Slam champions to reach the final in Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova, and Simona Halep. During that run, Ostapenko came back from a set down against both Kvitova and Halep, saving a match point against Kvitova in their clash.

The 24-year-old also commented on her fighting spirit, calling all the matches tough and being proud of her fighting spirit. She revealed that she had to fight hard as she had no choices on many of the occasions. The Latvian concluded by saying that the title would definitely be a huge confidence boost for her.

“I was fighting until the very last point, I even was down a match point against Petra [Kvitova]. Every match was very tough, and I was fighting, that was the main thing I was doing, because I had honestly no other choice. But I’m really happy with the way I was playing all week, and I think this way I can gain more confidence,” she concluded.
