“I wasn’t prepared for it” Eugenie Bouchard details how sudden shot to stardom derailed her tennis career

Eugenie Bouchard
Eugenie Bouchard burst into the tennis scene during her breakthrough 2014 season. The Canadian managed to reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the French Open, before her stellar run to the finals at Wimbledon. She broke several records in the process, she was the first Canadian player to reach the finals of a Grand Slam. Bouchard catapulted to stardom and soon became the face of Canadian tennis.
This shot her to fame and became a marketer’s dream. But Bouchard never managed to reach those heights again, as she struggled with the growing expectations on her and never managed to fulfill the destined career she was billed to have when she burst into the global scene. The former World No.5 herself admitted that she wasn’t ready for her sudden shot to fame. Bouchard said she didn’t expect such results during her early career and wasn’t prepared to handle the expectations that came with it.
“Yes, I agree with that fame comes quickly with it (tennis). I think that’s the part that most athletes or anybody is really least prepared for. You are training and planning for results and you are expecting these results. But I wasn’t prepared for the thing that would come with it. Like no one knows ahead of time. You don’t really wanna prematurely do that either, because if that never comes, you don’t wanna start thinking bigger than you are,” Bouchard said in an episode of tennis podcast ‘Tennis Inside-In’
Eugenie Bouchard all set to make a comeback after long injury layoff

Eugenie Bouchard is all set to make her comeback after spending nearly a year on the sidelines after she had to undergo surgery to treat a torn subscapularis in her right shoulder. She will make her return to the tennis circuit at U.S. Pro Women’s Clay Court Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Florida, which begins on April 11th. She was awarded a wildcard into the main draw for the ITF $100K event which will also kickstart her clay-court season.
Bouchard’s last tournament appearance was in Monterrey in March last year and is now currently ranked 1450th in the world. The 28-year-old played an exhibition tournament earlier this year at the 2022 Champions Series Tennis circuit. She won her first match on comeback, defeating 2020 Australian Open champion, Sofia Kenin 6-1. But she has a long way to go to make a proper return on the WTA circuit and a late-career resurgence back to the top of the game.
