“I would have reached the finals” Alexander Zverev reveals reason for Miami exit, talks about his season so far
Alexander Zverev
World No. 3 Alexander Zverev has been in the headlines for all the reasons except titles this season. After talking repeatedly about reaching the World No. 1 rank by winning the 2022 Australian Open in Novak Djokovic‘s absence, Zverev faltered in the 4th round and picked up warnings on his way out for smashing his racquet.
With an early exit from the major, he played in Montepellier where he lost in the finals to Alexander Bublik in a shocking defeat as he looked certain to claim the title. He next played in the 2022 Acapulco Open where his violent actions toward the chair umpire after losing in his doubles match also saw him get removed from the singles draw as well and being fined $60,000.
After a couple of wins in the Davis Cup qualifiers having sworn not to play in the latest format of the tournament, Zverev returned to the Tour for the 2022 Indian Wells Masters losing his first match before reaching the quarter-finals in the 2022 Miami Masters where also he had to face a defeat to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud.
As he prepares for the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, Zverev addressed the media over his season so far and the results as he went from a chance of reaching the World No. 1 to slipping to World No. 4 position only to break back into the Top-3 as Rafael Nadal injured himself in the Indian Wells.
“It’s still very early to rate my season, it’s been only a few tournaments. I got sick in Miami, who knows, maybe I would have reached the finals… I enjoy clay because it takes a lot of strength, which I like,” said Zverev during the media day in Monte-Carlo.
Alexander Zverev awaits his Monte-Carlo 2nd round opponent
Being the second seed in the tournament, Zverev has a bye in the first round and will start his campaign directly in the second round. He will take on the winner of the clash between qualifier Jaume Munar of Spain and Argentina’s Federico Delbonis who will square off in the first round. Zverev has already had practice sessions with Novak Djokovic and other players and will look to add another Masters title to his cabinet.
